The killing of three persons on Monday at Ekoli-Edda community of Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, yesterday infuriated Governor David Umahi who threatened to smoke out another criminal element behind the dastardly act. Recall that the youths of the community clashed with the members of Ebubeagu Security operatives led by the State All Progressive Congress, APC, Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha. The clash led to the death of two youths and a policeman while a section of the residence of the APC State Chairman was gutted by fire as cars and a motorcycle was damaged following the ugly episode. Addressing the protesting women of the Community, Governor Umahi who wondered what the APC Chairman was vying for in the 2023, to make him get involved in such an ungodly, gave 24 hours ultimatum to criminal elements with guns to surrender or face the music. He said: “Our dear women of Edda, it is a painful thing that your children are the ones putting you people ...

“If people want to get into a conflict with us, we’re quite prepared,” he said.

Jordan’s king says he is prepared for conflict should the status of Jerusalem’s holy sites change as Israel prepares to swear in what is likely to be the most right-wing government in its history. King Abdullah II told CNN’s Becky Anderson in an exclusive interview this month that there is “concern” in his country about those in Israel trying to push for changes to his custodianship of the Muslim and Christian holy sites in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem, warning that he has “red lines.” “If people want to get into a conflict with us, we’re quite prepared,” he said. “I always like to believe that, let’s look at the glass half full, but we have certain red lines… And if people want to push those red lines, then we will deal with that.” Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu’s incoming government is expected to be the most right-wing in Israel’s history and it includes controversial figures who were once considered to be on the extreme fringe of Israeli politics. This has caused ...

Tinubu prays court dismiss suit challenging his candidacy

Image
Sen. Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday, asked a Federal High Court, Abuja, to dismiss a suit seeking his nullification from the 2023 general election. Tinubu, through his counsel, Karma Fagbemi, told Justice Binta Nyako that the plaintiff; the Incorporated Trustees of Kingdom Human Rights Foundation International, was a meddlesome interloper who was neither a political party nor a candidate in the poll. He said the plaintiff lacked locus standi (legal right) to institute the case, which invariably challenged the political party’s decision and its internal affairs. APC lawyer, Ibrahim Audu, also spoke in the same vein. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group had sued the INEC chairman, the APC and Mr Tinubu as 1st to 3rd defendants respectively. The group, in an originating motion on notice marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1960/22, sought an order of mandamus directing INEC to exercise its statutory power in accord...

Security council tells Taliban to reverse restrictions on women in Afghanistan

Image
The UN security council has called on the Taliban to reverse policies targeting women and girls in Afghanistan , expressing alarm at the “increasing erosion” of human rights. The hardline Islamist rulers banned women from working in non-governmental organisations on Saturday, in the latest blow to women’s rights in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. The Taliban had already suspended university education for women and secondary schooling for girls. The 15-member UN security council said it was “deeply alarmed” by the increasing restrictions on women’s education, calling for “the full, equal, and meaningful participation of women and girls in Afghanistan”. It urged the Taliban “to reopen schools and swiftly reverse these policies and practices, which represents an increasing erosion for the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms”. The council also condemned the ban on women working for NGOs, warning of the detrimental impact the ban will have o...

U.S CONUS considering Covid entry restrictions for travelers from China

Image
The United States is considering Covid entry restrictions for travelers from China, US officials said Tuesday, after Beijing dramatically loosened hardline containment measures this month. Infections have surged across China as key pillars of its containment policy have been dismantled, prompting US officials to express concern at the potential for new variants to be unleashed. That potential became even more real Monday when Beijing said it would scrap mandatory Covid quarantine for overseas arrivals from January 8, prompting many in China to rush to plan trips abroad. “There are mounting concerns in the international community on the ongoing Covid-19 surges in China and the lack of transparent data, including viral genomic sequence data, being reported from the PRC,” the US officials said, referring to the People’s Republic of China. Beijing authorities have acknowledged the outbreak is “impossible” to track and have done away with much-maligned case tallies, in addition ...

-1st Testimony — “There was a rich man that dressed in purple and fine linen, who enjoyed luxurious living every day. In front of his gate a beggar named Lazarus was placed, covered with sores, and hungering to be fed crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. The beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried, and while suffering tortures in hades, he looked up and from a distance saw Abraham with Lazarus in his bosom. So he called out, ‘Father Abraham, take pity on me and send Lazarus to dip his fingertip in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this fire.’ But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you enjoyed the good things in your lifetime while Lazarus had the bad things; now he is being comforted here but you are suffering anguish. Besides, there is a great chasm fixed between you and us, so that those who want to cross from here to y...
